Ok, so first off I must iterate the fact that this particular run down is in no particular order, nor is it a definitive list of the best British record labels of all time (as if such a breakdown could ever be truly quantified). It is simply a list of some personal favourites within the British...MORE>>
If I had to sum up this song in one word I doubt I’d have to think very long to decide. Fantastic would be the word I’d choose and in my opinion it’s still not enough to describe how good this song his. With the recent, tragic death of folk legend John Martyn, folk music has taken a major part of my listening time and Ella Edmondson will certainly become a great addition to that.

“Hold Your Horses” is a perfect song, brilliant guitar playing, beautiful singing, and a violin which gives the whole thing a fuller, folkier sound that fits more than perfectly. I imagine Joni Mitchell was an influence on this song, but apparently this girl’s influences range from metal to country music. That may seem strange but when “Heavy Metal” began with Led Zeppelin at the forefront, there were always folk influences, so it’s not as unusual as it originally appears. The whole song is lively, and the chorus is simple yet at the same time genius – a rare thing in music these days. I’m actually astounded at how amazing this song is, I’ve not heard new folk music (or in fact new music in general) that has been of this high a standard in a
very long time and I feel that a big record label should sign her up quickly and deliver her music to the masses. With the continuing increase in Indie and manufactured pop music saturating the charts, Ella Edmondson is not only the type of fresh air that we need, she IS that fresh air and I am entirely confident that her music will become inspirational to many. She will receive the attention that she has already proven that she deserves, get rid of the Ting Tings and get this girl on the radio, as soon as you hear her music you will agree.
I admit I’ve probably overdone praising this song, but there isn’t a negative, in my opinion anyway. “Hold Your Horses” so far is my choice for song of the year and will take some beating. We’ll see what happens in the coming future, however currently Ella Edmondson is my new found obsession and with material of this quality I imagine she will be for a long time to come. Outstanding.
