Ok, so first off I must iterate the fact that this particular run down is in no particular order, nor is it a definitive list of the best British record labels of all time (as if such a breakdown could ever be truly quantified). It is simply a list of some personal favourites within the British...MORE>>

GOLDHEART ASSEMBLY

As the old saying goes, "never judge a book by it's cover" and, to compliment this, I've been told countless times throughout life "never make assumptions". Yet - no matter how often I'm told this - I still do, I'm sure we all do, and when I got to Goldheart Assembly...well lets just say it wasn't a good perception that I held of them.

However,
The Jesus Wheel was one of those times when initial reactions are proved wrong. It wasn't a brilliant song, but it edged more to the side of good than it did bad, I was so sure it'd be terrible - it wasn't. The strongest aspect to the tune is, without a

doubt, the vocals (the lyrics however aren't great, but they are different) which open strongly with the line "So what becomes of the load?" and from there on in are consistently tight. Elsewhere, the band put forth a good tune, but it's been done before. Indie bands now try to become unique by adding different elements to the mixing pot, and the most popular one so far seems to be a slight folk sound, thus unfortunately for

Goldheart Assembly folkish indie/pop has been done many-a-time over the last year or so, thus they just begin to sound like many other bands with nothing individual about the set-up...bar vocals. This isn't a new problem for a new band, but with six members I struggle to see how they haven't come up with something at least slightly unique to them and them alone.

Other songs (
Wolves and Thieves, The Last Decade and so on) back up exactly what The Jesus Wheel made me think, but with each and every member contributing vocals at some point except Dominic Keshavarz (lead guitar) sometimes the powerful vocals disappear also, creating boring songs that you've heard before by another band. Therefore, in summary, The Jesus Wheel is a song just passing the test with a 51% approval however, as I take in more of the other songs on offer, I begin to realise that my initial thoughts were correct - only two songs out of six work. Goldheart Assembly offer very little, if anything, to new indie music, and I'd recommend only listening to The Jesus Wheel and Going Down Well, but with Steve Lamacq "championing" the band, it's clear that there will be people who'll lap this stuff up, and good on them.
