Ok, so first off I must iterate the fact that this particular run down is in no particular order, nor is it a definitive list of the best British record labels of all time (as if such a breakdown could ever be truly quantified). LAURA IZIBOR

The name, the look, the song titles, the backing vocals, everything about Laura Izibor is classic soul. Unfortunately, apart from the music.

With a voice that excels, particularly in chorus of “Shine” this girl could have done music more akin to Diana Ross and the likes. However, the whole set up to “Shine” has more in common with Joss Stone’s style. Its soul influenced, you’d have to be deaf to not realise that,

but it’s too poppy. Too commercial. Not enough...”OW!!” James Brown style, if you understand. I just feel that this song is too modern to be classed as soul. That’s really the only bone I have to pick with it, but as a result it doesn’t cut it for me personally.

As I’ve already stated, Miss Izibor can defiantly sing, and writing her own material will gain her greater credibility against each manufactured pop group that seem to appear every day. The lyrics to “Shine” aren’t brilliant, but they are certainly up-beat and fit extremely well with the light hearted nature of the tune. Songs like this can lighten a mood on even the darkest of days.

After beginning to take interest in music at the age of 13, it’s clear to see that Laura is very passionate about what she does, and after winning a prestigious national performance competition only two years later, stardom was obviously not far off. Thus, after opening for soul legends such as Aretha Franklin, and a current supporting slot with John Legend, Laura Izibor will most likely be a household name in the very near future. A major record label behind her, her debut album “Let The Truth Be Told” to be released in April this year, her songs being used for Hollywood movie soundtracks, and Rolling Stone’s “Artist to Watch” also indicate the potential that this girl contains. If you haven’t heard the name, you will be hearing it everywhere extremely soon. Maybe sooner!

As a whole, there is nothing wrong with “Shine” as a song. It’s catchy, up-tempo, light hearted and so on. Yet, there’s also nothing exceptional here, well nothing apart from her voice – which well be the driving force of her career. As I’ve already made clear, big things lie in wait, but I’d recommend this sort of stuff to pop fans first, soul fans second and that’s the main reason this song doesn’t do much (if anything) for my personal liking.
