Ok, so first off I must iterate the fact that this particular run down is in no particular order, nor is it a definitive list of the best British record labels of all time (as if such a breakdown could ever be truly quantified). Logging onto bands’ myspace pages is like having all the songs in the world on shuffle. There’s that point where only part of the page has loaded but the songs start playing, and you don’t know what the song is because the player isn’t visible yet.

MGMT Electric Feel

Logging onto MGMTs page was akin to this blindfolded song-shuffling, with Electric Feel being the first on the list. All you can see is the giant MGMT banner smacking you in the face, and the soothing intro warming your ears. This intro feels synonymous with the intros for a large amount of feel-good hits, so instantly puts a smile on your face.  That smile can only broaden as the song progresses, creating one of MGMTs most laid-back, summery tunes.

From the latest album Oracle Spectacular, ‘Electric Feel’ blends in nicely with the array of catchy riffs and lyrics which make up the aforementioned album. At a cosy 5:24 minutes long, Electric Feel gets the shoulders rocking and the head bobbing. The ever-present backing drumbeat keeps a steady rhythm to the song with no scary changes in tempo.  A very simple but contagious bass guitar tune remains consistent almost the whole way through, which was definitely the best thing for the bass in this song.

It’s not got the spark that ‘Time to Pretend’ had though; nothing could match that electro riff that caused thousands of club-goers to squawk hundreds of variations of one-syllable words in what they thought was the same tone.

For someone who’s not a big MGMT fan, I certainly got this song stuck in the brain for days.  It’s a beast of a tune. Perfect for playing whilst driving around on a sunny day with windows down, sunglasses donned and an ice cream in hand.

Shame it’s colder than a bare bum on an ice rink right now.
