OFFICIAL SECRETS ACT

With a band name like “Official Secrets Act” you wouldn’t expect this London group to get very far. However, with a record label already behind them (One Little Indian) they seem to be heading in the right direction, and the music isn’t bad either. “So Tomorrow” is a funky, indie song with a slight Joy Division touch. Never mind The Wombats telling you to dance to Joy Division, these guys are playing a clearly Joy Division influenced sound.

The song instantly kicks in with an indie guitar riff, with bass and drums playing a minor role. This then builds with the vocals until the chorus which undoubtedly will have people up and down the country chanting along. It is extremely difficult to even think that this song will not be a hit, it fits in with the current scene and is terribly – almost annoyingly – catchy, so watch this space

Despite their clear ability to produce high standard material, Official Secrets Act are not without their weak points. On “So

Tomorrow” Tom Charge Burke’s (vocals/guitar) voice doesn’t fit perfectly to the music. In my opinion, if he tried a more Ian Curtis style rather than the chirpy indie vocals that are on the track then they’d be on course to have a modern-day classic. The lyrics also aren’t brilliant, in fact by the time the song reaches the second verse, “everything is better at the weekend and everything is better with a car/everything is better with a girlfriend who is ten times cooler than you are” the lyrics just become embarrassing. The Joy Division influence clearly played no part in the writing of these lyrics and I’m sure Mr Curtis will be spinning in his grave if this is how his legacy shall be passed on to future generations.

As was mentioned earlier, Official Secrets Act have a chart hit on their hands, and if they continue at this rate you’ll be hearing them a lot very soon. All in all, “So Tomorrow” provides the listener with an up tempo, dance/new wave/pop song which has received attention from Zane Lowe and the BBC, and if Official Secrets Act just deal with their lyrical problem then they’ll be on course to be the next big thing.
