Ok, so first off I must iterate the fact that this particular run down is in no particular order, nor is it a definitive list of the best British record labels of all time (as if such a breakdown could ever be truly quantified). Said to be more infectious than swine flu, I was intrigued to listen to and to get
to know the music of The Jacks. With a Hey Molly sound, their debut single ‘Not Me

After forming in 2007, the band has gained notoriety because of their will to perform live. This provides their music with a catchy, warm feel which is annoyingly addictive. Their music does not adhere to one genre, instead it takes influences from a diverse range of styles. ‘Not Me Not You’ uses a drop beat which is a derivative of reggae, yet simultaneously it has the feel of current indie bands like Hey Molly or The Libertines.
‘Not Me Not You’ was recorded live, harking back to the ‘good ye olden days’. The Jacks pride themselves on their live gigs and the raw sound this provides. This can be seen in the single, as through the live performance their commitment to producing a tight ensemble of melodies and harmonies can be seen. The lyrics resonate with teenage angst, covering girlfriend troubles and struggles. Their sound is easy on the ear and makes for easy listening. The song as a whole is simply constructed using a set of three chords but lacks a good hook for the chorus. The song relies on the music rather than the vocals. Also, because the song has been recorded live the vocals are muffled.
The Jacks have supported One Night Only, Newton Faulkner and Imperial Leisure. Last April the band toured with The Long Blondes where they gained a few opening slots. From this they attracted the expertise of Saul Davies to produce ‘Not Me Not You’ at the Fish Factory Studios in Neasden. Over this summer they are playing at Club Fandango at Dublin castle London on 30th June, The William Cobbett in Farnham on 4th July, The Roadmender with Kid British in Northampton on 21st July and The Roadmender in Northampton on 5th September.
‘Not Me Not You’ will be released on 29th June on the bands own label, Jangle Chain Records.
