THE QUOTES

Traditional indie four piece, The Quotes have done their rounds of the festivals this summer after receiving sell-out crowds at venues such as The Monto Water Rats in London and South Streets Arts Theatre in Reading. But most notably, they have brushed shoulders with established bands including The Charlatans and less reputable act Goldie Lookin’ Chain plus newcomers Hockey.

With a dedicated local fan base in their hometown of Reading, the band have been able to record a new EP in Area 18 Studios, London, to follow their album which was released in September last year. The Monte Rosa EP was showcased to fans on the 24th and 25th July at the sell out gig in Reading. The name for the EP arrived after the time the band spent in Northern Italy in January

of this year, where they made the most of their stay, playing nine times a week.

Influences such as the recently explosive Kings of Leon are obvious in songs such as Down the Line where the underlying high pitched guitar riff is similar to songs from the mainstream fourth album of the American band. However singer Ben Smith’s strong voice prevents the band from becoming a complete copy of the Kings, even with the American twang, where the lyrics here are much easier to catch. The line “It all just seems to fall in place/It all just comes so easy”, could well be a reference to their blossoming success, after a positive reception from the general public was reflected by The Quotes being crowned winners of this years “Road to V” competition.

Good old fashioned indie is a staple part of this band, with solid melodies and leather jackets an essential. A return to old ways is refreshing after countless new bands exploring new avenues, usually resulting in electro and keyboard bashing.

Lead guitarist James Ashby explained why they have admitted to playing “stadium rock” by saying “A lot of people say our songs are massive and sound like they’re trying to fill stadiums so we just came up with calling it stadium rock. We’ve been gigging loads.”

Differing from most bands, all of The Quotes help out with the vocals in the live shows - which you can witness for yourself if you pop down to Que Pasa in Maidenhead on 30th August , The Bolieroom in Guilford on 9th September or Oakford Social Club in Reading on 17th September.
