THE ROSEVILLE BAND
CALUM MACNAB

"The Roseville Band, Boxer - begin. Nice guitar there. Build up of drums with some brass, good, good stuff. Wait, no, seriously!? That's his voice!?" This is how you most likely will feel when sticking on The Roseville Band if you haven't - like me - heard them before. However, eventually you'll either grow to love it or it'll just get more and more on your nerves - this vocalist is that kind of distinction.

The Roseville Band

On the first few listens, I was completely confused by the whole thing, I couldn't get my head round it at all, but I am now telling you to listen to it one more time when you get to the point of "no more". Just once more - I did - and now everything just seems fantastic.

The Roseville Band pull out all they can in Boxer, the song might be slow and mellow, but it shows that these guys are the real deal. The guitar is nice and bluesy in its tone which goes fantastically well with the subtle brass pieces

which appear throughout, however the vocals aren't bluesy in any way shape or form. No grunt to them, no growl, just high pitched (but not screechy) weirdness. Loveable weirdness, in fact I'm convinced Andy Jones (singer) could do a very soulful shout if required. Simply fantastic - the blues influence is clear to see, but this band have just added a whole new dimension to such style it's hard to sum everything up at all. You just have to hear it.

The bands myspace claims
"Sounds Like: " and I agree totally. Take away the vocals and you have very clear influences throughout both seventies blues and modern music. Add the vocals back into the mix and you have something new entirely - along with the horns which cap off nicely the fact that this band are different - it is truly special. NME described them as the "Welsh Kings of Leon" which is fair enough...but seeing as the Kings of Leon are now rubbish it's not a very good compliment. The Roseville Band are, and always will, be their own band - love it or hate it, you can't deny that they do things their way. Many have tipped these guys for big things in the future and I'd say that they're well on track to achieving them with material of this caliber and an album out in April. Big things should come easy.
