Ok, so first off I must iterate the fact that this particular run down is in no particular order, nor is it a definitive list of the best British record labels of all time (as if such a breakdown could ever be truly quantified). It is simply a list of some personal favourites within the British...MORE>>
Them Crooked Vultures. What, you haven’t heard of them? Well they are probably the
most eagerly anticipated act of 2009.
Since 2005 some of the biggest names in rock
have teamed up to inject a little evilness back into the alternative scene.
OK here’s
how it is: You've got Queens of the Stone Age front man Josh Homme, the modern day
legend that is Dave Grohl, and a guy who was an integral part of what could be considered
the best rock band of all time John Paul Jones from Led Zep.
Maybe it’s just me but it seems hard to think that a band like that can possibly
suck.
New Fang is the first single from their self titled album, and is set to
be released on the 17th November.
So how does it sound?
Well, you can tell Josh Homme has been turning his hand to production
lately. The whole song oozes his unique skill of making jazzy riffs sound damn sinister.
It
even sounds as if Dave has been Queens'ized in order to make the song work. Grohl
is a top drummer, and the song doesn’t really make a big deal out of it. I like that.
Bass.
Well it coincides with the darkness of Homme's musical style. You would think the
band look as if they’ve just got someone’s granddad to come and fill until they get
a more stylish bassist, but he fits in surprisingly well with the band’s image.
The
song has a nice little drum intro followed by the crazy guitar weirdness of Homme.
It’s fairly upbeat until he brings in some pretty raw vocals that have been recorded
in a way that sounds gritty and authentic. This helps to create a more organic feel
to the track and it really sounds as if you may have just discovered a discarded
demo in a vault from a band that should have been big way back when.
The verse is
good, but a little tiresome. |The pre-
It is a really cool track and well worth a listen. But did you expect
more from all the hype? I did. Just enjoy it as if you didn’t know who was in the
band and how much effort went into it. Only then can you really appreciate New Fang.
