TOMMY REILLY

After hearing bits and pieces of Tommy Reilly throughout the Orange Unsigned Act TV reality show, (which he subsequently went on to win) I thought I knew exactly what to expect with this song. However, Gimme a Call was not even close to my original assumptions, and for that I'm glad.

The Scottish Singer-Songwriter's first single is a soft, tender tune, nicely combining his musical influences and tastes with hints of Bob Dylan and modern Indie music. In short,
Gimme a Call is pretty much the song you'd expect to hear produced when the Libertines and

the Cribs joined together to write a song in the style of music legend Dylan. It's an unusual sound, but it clearly works as Gimme a Call reached number 14 in the UK charts when released as Tommy's first single (with his second single Jackets reaching Number 1 in the Scottish charts). Another intriguing factor about this song is the fact that Mr Reilly isn't scared to include shriek moments in between the

gentler ballad periods, sometimes even letting his East Dunbartonshire accent become incredibly strong and then letting it fade off slightly again, but that's the style, that's the appeal, Tommy Reilly is something new, something different, something enjoyable, and he clearly believes in what he's doing. Despite being the new kid on the block, with the new style, the new sound and so on, Gimme a Call isn't a new idea, in fact the song is quite cliched at parts, but in the overall scheme of things I'd be clutching at straws to find ways to say that this ruined the song - it doesn't.

As well as writing his own material, Tommy Reilly also plays his own instruments, making the songs well and truly his own (according to his myspace he plays Guitar, Piano, Drums, and Harmonica) and that is something to be proud of. This, coupled with a tour about to take off on the 18th of July, Tommy Reilly is moving on to bigger and better things after the Orange Unsigned Act, which is rare for reality winners these days, so already it's clear there is something special about this guy. Keep an eye out for future updates and you will not be disappointed, I guarantee it.
